  • Assessing Your Child's Learning Difficulty or Learning Disability

If you or your child's teacher sees that your child may have trouble learning, you should probably pursue a learning disabilities assessment. First, have the child's hearing and vision tested. Perhaps they just need a hearing aid or a pair of glasses. If hearing and vision are fine, then the child should receive a Learning Disabilities (LD) evaluation.

Counselling

The goal of counselling is to help individuals overcome many of their present & future problems. In recent times, rapid social change caused by industrialization and urbanization has led to varied and perplexing problems. For most people the pace of change is simply too fast and creates serious problems of adjustment.

At the MindTherapy Foundation we address a variety of problems, such as educational, vocational, marital, parental, and personal. The major objective of counselling is to help individuals become self-confident, self-dependant, self-directed and to adjust themselves efficiently to the demands of a better and meaningful life. Individuals are provided assistance to enhance their personal, social, emotional and intellectual development.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Counselling?

Counselling is a way for people who are having problems that they can't handle, can't control, or just don't know how to deal with, to find help from a trained professional. There are many types of counselling. It is dealt with talk therapy. A person goes to a counselor because he/she can't find the answers to a problem. A counselor will listen to the problem and ask probing questions to get at a deeper level of what is going on. The therapist will then either explore with you ways that you can change your thinking about the issue or teach you skills so that you can correct this concern on your own.

What is the difference between counselling and therapy?

We will be using the words counselling and therapy interchangeably. There are many different kinds of counselling such as career counselling or debt counselling. There are also many types of therapy like physical therapy or gene therapy. We will be talking about the psychological types of counselling and therapy.

How can it help me?

Therapy can help alleviate emotional pain and suffering. It can teach you new skills with which you can successfully deal with the problems at hand. It can save a marriage. It can help increase your self esteem. It can give you hope that there is a better way, or a way out. It can do all these things and more. The only thing it can't do is change you. You have to do that by yourself. You have to take the skills or new ideas and put them into practice in your life. We continually tell our clients that unless they take what they learned and put it into practice out in the world, counselling will do them no good.

What does successful counselling look and feel like?

Successful counselling feels like something has changed, something is different. You feel more hope and self-confidence. You are trying out new behaviors and they are working. The way successful therapy looks is other people begin to comment that something about you seems different. Maybe they don't know what has changed in you, but you feel better to be around. You will also notice that you are having different results from actions that in the past would not have gone so well. In the end, you will always be the one to make the decision about whether therapy has been successful or not.

What do I do if it's not helping?

The first thing you do is tell your counselor. Explain what is not working and why. Discuss things that have worked in the past. If the counselor gets defensive it may be time to look for someone else. But it is important to reflect on what your therapist says. The reason we need counselling from time to time is that we can't see our self defeating thoughts or behaviors and it sometimes takes an impartial observer to point out to us what is obvious to others.

How do I know when I am done?

You will feel done. Most of the concerns and anxiety that brought you into therapy will have dissipated. You will have learned coping skills and new behaviors to deal with any issues that may persist. Your therapist should be able to give you feedback about your decision and discuss whether or not they feel you are ready to terminate. Ultimately the decision is in your hands.

In Brief

Psychotherapy is concerned with the person as a whole: their life history, their past and present relationships, and both their conscious & unconscious.

The relationship between the therapist and the client facilitates self-discovery, change and growth. It is a process which requires time and regular attendance at sessions.

The following issues, mild or not, indicate whether a professional is required to help resolve these. Third-party intervention generally does not necessarily mean an in depth therapy. In some cases a simple consultation would be adequate. If you present with one or more of the issues listed below, you may want to consider visiting your general practitioner. That is, to understand and become more knowledgeable of the way medical issues could play a role in your distress in one or more issues listed below, you could be prompted to visit your General Practitioner. Together with this we recommend you to see a mental health professional as well.

  • If harmony in your family or in your relationship has been disturbed (even in the case of one that does not exist).
  • If you have been living devoid of happiness and contentment over a period of time.
  • If you are feeling tired constantly or have difficulty in falling asleep (partly due to medical issues, work related, or jet lag).
  • If you have been feeling low or in a bad mood over a period of time.
  • If you feel helpless or hopeless over a period of time, or if you feel bad about yourself; hate, blame, or despise yourself; feeling that you "want to put an end to all this".
  • If you often experience anger, or hear people tell you that you are angry very often
  • If you feel that you are losing control (shouting, or being pre-occupied with what other people say or do or may be doing; or if people accuse you of assuming too much control.
  • If you behave in a manner that is not work related or otherwise objectively necessary. Such behaviors may be related to cleaning or eating; or thinking often about one particular thing, such as eating, or the way you look - as examples.
  • If people tell you that you have a drinking problem or if you feel that you sometimes drink alcohol to get rid of a problem. The same is true of other chemical substances.
  • If you feel that sometimes you have a problem concentrating, keeping track of your thoughts, or being productive, over a period of time.
  • If you often experience internal tension, either psychological or physical (e.g., being on-guard, alert, or fearful/anxious) or in your body (muscle tension, headache, butterflies in the stomach, difficulties in breathing, tension in your chest, etc.), and the tension is not (only) due to a well-defined issue such as heart disease.
  • If you sometimes feel as if you are going mad; if you feel extreme fear related to a particular event or issue (even when there is a real danger involved).
  • If you went through a traumatic or dramatic event (even a minor one).
  • If the word "failure" seem to appear too often in your life or thoughts.
  • If you or someone very close to you behaves in a way that simply feels weird.
  • If you sometimes feel that your thoughts are running "fantastically" and you feel exhausted but still your thoughts continue to run. (This is NOT to say: if you are intelligent, then you need help. Think about the exhaustion.)
